Artist's Description
Beyond Syrrako in my previous upload, another village that lies on the slopes of mount Lakmos but on the other side than that of Syrrako is the village of Haliki. Its name derives from the white gravels that are in the riverbed of the nearby Achelous river which is the second largest river of Greece and emanates from mount Lakmos. Gravel in Greek is written as "χαλίκι" (haliki).
Achelous river that begins its course on mount Lakmos from the alpine lake of Verligka, is called Aspros (or white) river around this area and later as it gets larger and wider with vast amounts of water the river is getting called Achelous.
Haliki is a Vlach village, meaning that its people speak the Aromanian or Vlach language and the first testimonials about this settlement can be found in 1336 AD. Therefore it has a history of at least seven centuries while some of the churches and monasteries in the village and the area around it date back to the 18th and 19th centuries.
