A church with unique architecture in the midst of nowhere.
The first documentation about this church we can find it in an 1839 Turkish firman.
The Holy Cross church was built around 1770 and once used to be a part of the Saint Nicholas Monastery, now known as Cincture of the Virgin Mary monastery. It is located near a very small Vlach village called Krania, in the Trikala region - Greece.
Today the specific church is a dependency of the St Stephen monastery in Meteora -Kalambaka. The Cincture of the Virgin Mary monastery and one small chapel that is on the road towards this place and is dedicated to St Nicholas, are also dependencies of the St Stephen monastery. The monastery's buildings except this specific church were destroyed in September of 1943 by the Germans. It is said that the Germans burned and raised to the ground the monastery because of guerillas actions around this area that had killed 80 German soldiers.
So the church of the Holy Cross is the only building that has survived. It has 12 domes in total while the central dome is a double one. A really extraordinary architecture, especially for a place where there are only a few settlements and small remote villages.
High-quality imagery by Elias Pentikis with his own hand-written signature provided with a 30-day money-back guarantee from Fine Art America. Canvas prints, metal prints, fine art paper prints, framed prints.

No Windows, Looks More Like a Stronghold Than a Church. Well Sone!
Elias Pentikis replied:
Thank you, Robert! Who knows, maybe they had a reason for that. The church was built during the Ottoman era.
