A panoramic view on Paggaio or Pangeon mount in the Greek East Macedonia region. On the left hand, we can see the tallest peak of the Pangeon mount which is called Mati "the Eye" at 1,957m. Then far on the horizon, it can be seen the mount Falakro (2,232m). The first villages bellow is the villages of Nikisiani and Georgiani.
Among the Pangeon and Falakro mounts is the valley of Philippi, with the ancient ruins of the Philippi town. A town that was built with the name Krinides by migrants from the Thassos island but very soon was fortified by the father of Alexander the Great, Philip the Second and changed its name to Philippi.
Philippi is the place were Apostle Pavlos baptized the first European Christian in 49 or 50 AC. A woman whose name was Lydia. Also in this valley in 42 BC occurred a battle between Mark Anthony with Octavian on the one side and Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus on the other side who were the leaders behind Julius Caesar assassination.
Pangeon mount was quite famous for its deposits in silver and gold and the many mines that helped Philip the Second to finance his army and execute his campaigns in order to unite the whole Greek world, the city-states of southern Greece against the Persians.
The mount is also referred into Greek myths and by Aeschylus in his tragedy "Persai".
